Hello Everyone. I’m Annick, a French and English instructor.
Do you like this time of the year, when the leaves are falling from the trees, and it is getting colder?
When in town you can see everywhere illuminations, Christmas decoration and pop up Christmas trees and hear Christmas songs?
I like this time of the year.
A few days ago a student told me that 20 November is a special day for her. This is because every year, on that day, her mother takes out the ‘KOTATSU’. It is the beginning of the most joyful time of the year for her. She loves to relax under the KOTATSU with her cat and family. I like this family traditions.
A family tradition I always loved as a kid, was to decorate the Christmas tree.
We always had a big, beautiful pine tree that we bought with my father at the tree market. We would go with him to the market in our little Volkswagen and would choose the most beautiful tree we could find. Every tree had a different shape. No tree was the same. It always felt as we were adopting a child. And the child would come to stay with us for some time. Be part of our family.
We were taking good care of our child! We gave our tree the most beautiful clothes. The shopping for clothes was always my mother’s job. So in the case of the tree, she took out an enormous box full of decoration out of the cave. And we helped her to decorate our tree. We also put lights in his, her branches so he, she could shine. Finally we put at the top of the tree the beautiful, golden tree topper.
Then my parents would put our Christmas presents under the tree. The tree would keep our presents safe. We would keep him, her in a good condition too. We gave our tree water. We sang Christmas songs for him/her. Our tree was never alone. He, she had of course always the company of the baby Jesus, Maria, Joseph, the shepherds, the animals and the tree wise men, little statues in a shed, whit whom we liked to play the nativity, the story of the birth of little Jesus, again and again.
Nowadays a lot of people in Belgium prefer to buy an artificial tree they can use every year again. It is better for the environment. I totally agree with that. Little Jesus is also the same every year! When I came to Japan I bought an artificial tree at the Eon, not to big, because I had to transport it by bike. Every November I take out my little tree and put it together as a puzzle. The decorations are simple, but it gives me a warm feeling. It reminds me of the family tradition back in the old days in Belgium. The little Jesus and his family got lost when we moved to Japan. Sorry, little Jesus! But you are still in my heart.
So in conclusion you could say that the Christmas tree is for me like the KOTATSU for my student.
He, she keeps me and my family warm in these cold days.
As a little gift for Christmas I would like to share with you 2 pictures.
The first picture is my Christmas tree.
The second picture is a cute nativity scene I saw in the big church of Utrecht in Holland, the native town of the creator of Miffy (Nijntje in Dutch), Dick Bruna.
Enjoy this time of the year! Keep warm!
