Hi, this is Aya, English instructor in Sendai school.
How is everyone doing in this cold season?

It’s already December and it means Christmas is coming soon.
Do you know that Christmas is not always on 25th of December?

I was living in Russia for a while before and their Christmas
was on the 7th of January.
Why?
Because in Russia, they use the Julian calendar, which is the old calendar in Western countries.
December 25th in the Julian calendar falls on January 7th in the modern calendar.
So when you are facing the end of new year days in Japan, people in Russia is celebrating their Christmas.

They have the custom to decorate Christmas trees, and a Christmas tree is called “yolka” in Russian.
It was nice feeling to see the beautifully decorated yolka in the very cold weather, with real snow falling onto it.
(It of course depends on the area but in Russia, the temperature could go down to minus 40 or even lower in winter.)

This year, I’m spending winter time with my husband and son.
And I’m thinking about preparing a Christmas tree because my son will like it.

I hope all of you are having good time and peaceful holidays.
Take care and keep warm!

ちなみに・・・雪の深さはこれぐらいだったそうですよ↑
