クリスマスイベント「クリスマスブログでマイル獲得」

楽しいレッスンが人気の講師RenatoによるChristmas in Paraguay, South Americaです。

Hi! This is Renato! While walking around town and noticing all the lights and Christmas decorations, I can’t help but think about the differences between Christmas in Japan and in South America. So today I thought I would like to share a little bit about these…

First of all, weather!

While in Japan Christmas is celebrated during winter, it is the opposite in South America. Most of my friends in Paraguay celebrate Christmas doing outdoors BBQ and hanging around the BBQ grill with cold drinks in hand. Some people also prepare turkey for dinner accompanied with cold salads and a common Christmas drink called Clerico. Clerico is a mixture of fruits with orange juice and red wine that is prepared the day before Christmas and stored in the refrigerator, so its flavour is stronger the next day.

Second difference, the decorations!

While it is also common to decorate houses with lights in the same manner as in Japan, there is a small difference. This difference is that each family arranges a Nativity scene in front of their houses between December 20th and 24th. Some of these arrangements might be very simple while others are quite extensive and detailed. Nevertheless, all of them share the same characters Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the three kings that visited Jesus when he was born. Some people also decorate the scene with summer fruits symbolizing abundance.

Third difference, Christmas sounds!

While in Japan Christmas is full of Christmas related music, in Paraguay is usually quite noisy. First of all, since Christmas season occurs during summer, the environment is full with cicada sounds. The hotter the day the noisier they will be. But their arrival brings a lot of happiness since it indicates that Christmas and New Year’s are getting closer. Second, it is traditional that parents gift a bag full of firecrackers to kids before Christmas eve. So, the streets get full of children and adults alike, playing with firecrackers and small rockets in family. I think this is a nice tradition since it can be a nice opportunity for bonding with family members.

I hope you will have a beautiful Christmas day and also a happy new year’s eve! Don’t forget to set your goals for next year and enjoy your time with family or friends!

Merry Christmas!
