皆さん「正式なお茶会」 に行ったことがありますか？
私は仙台に来てすぐに（もう３０年以上前の話ですが）輪王寺のお茶会に行きました。

Have you been to a traditional tea ceremony?
Right after I moved to Sendai ( almost more than 30 years ago) I went to one at Rinnouji temple.
当時はお茶会がどのようなものなのか?
輪王寺というのが仙台でどれほど格式のあるお寺なのか?
ということなど全く知らずに当時英語を独学で勉強していた私は
外国人に日本の伝統的なことを話すのに自分自身のいい経験になればと思って
本当に気軽な気持ちで、気軽すぎる気持ちで参加しました。
At that time I had no idea what Japanese traditional tea ceremony was like or that Rinnouji is such a formal temple in Sendai.
I was teaching myself English and I thought it would be great to talk about some Japanese tradition to foreign people if I experience one myself. I just joined it with very casual feelings, too casual.
その出で立ちは…
なんと寝起きのままのスウェットスーツだったのです！！
その場に着いて、周りからの突き刺さるような視線の中で自分がどれほど場違いの格好をしていたのか。
本当に恥ずかしかったです。
How I looked was…
I was in a sweat suit right after I woke up.
When I was there, I felt piercing eyes looking down me.
They made me realize how awkwardly
I looked. I was sooooo embarrassed.
ラッキーなことに、偶然同じような格好で来ていたアメリカ人の友人たちを見つけ、話し始めました。
すると、周りの視線がわずかに和らいだのです。
“外国人”だと思われたようで、それからはずっと英語と変な日本語で通しました。
すると、鋭い視線を向けていた人たちの態度がはっきりと変わりました。
Luckily, I met my American friends who were also in very casual clothes like me.
We started talking in English. And then I felt the attitude of those people giving me a piercing eyes had changed clearly.
「sumimasen, konna fuku, gomemnasai, Japanese tea ceremony shirimasen」
「いいんですのよ。外国の方なんですから。お気楽に楽しんでくださいね。日本語お上手ですね。」と
美しい着物を着たご婦人から言われました。
I said, sumimasen, konna fuku, gomemnasai, Japanese tea ceremony shirimasen.
“Don’t worry about it at all. You’re not Japanese.
Please take it easy and enjoy the event”, said a lady in a gorgeous kimono.
というようなやり取りで、長い正座も“免除”され、“日系人“ということでお茶会初体験を終えました。
高校時代に演劇部に在籍していた“演技力”も見事に発揮されました。(笑)
Anyway, in this way I was allowed not to keep sitting straight until the end and I was considered a Nikkei. This is how I finished experiencing the very first Japanese traditional tea ceremony.
My acting skills I learned when I was in high school helped me indeed. LOL
