Hi, Greg here! After a record number of suggestions from the public, Ueno Zoo’s baby panda has
finally been named. Xiang Xiang (シャンシャン) was the name chosen from over 320,000 suggestions.
Governor Koike said: “The name is easy to say and sounds cute.” Written in kanji, the panda’s
name means ‘fragrance’ (香香).

Xiang Xiang was born on June 12th and will make her debut with his mother, Shin Shin, in December.
Pandas are the biggest attraction at Ueno Zoo. Kansai University estimates that Xiang Xiang will
add 26-billion yen to the local economy.
