Last monday was 海の日, so I went to Shiogama to check out the 港祭り. The festival starts in morning (actually it usually starts the night before with fireworks, but because of the tsunami there were no fireworks this year), when the two portable shrines (御神輿) are being carried down from the shrine to the port. Then they load the shrines on to a boat, and take them on a tour around the islands. This year the boat carrying the shrines were accompanied by 80 other ships! When the boat later comes back with the portable shrines, they carry it all the way back to the shrine again, up the 202 steps. I talked to some people and hopefully, next year I can join the shrine carriers!仙台インストラクター AXEL
